Oscar Luis Martinez

Oscar Luis Martínez, a Puerto Rican artist based in Chicago, is a renowned figure in the world of contemporary art. His journey began with a unique blend of science and art education at the University of Illinois in Champaign, culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Medical Art in 1977. His artistic accomplishments extend far and wide, with a prolific career that has seen him participate in group and solo exhibitions across the Caribbean, Mexico, and various regions in the United States. His work has graced prestigious institutions like the Museum of Bellas Artes and the National Historical Museum in Mexico, the Puerto Rican Art Museum in Puerto Rico, the National Museum of Art in Chicago, and the Ponce Museum of Art and History to name a few.

 

Martínez's artistic influence extends beyond the canvas; he has left an indelible mark on Chicago's mural movement, contributing murals that now stand as historical landmarks. His contributions to the arts go beyond creation; he was appointed by the Mayor of Chicago to judge international design competitions for the Chicago Library and was even entrusted with curating the selection of the Chicago Public Library's art collection. Martínez's dedication to his craft and community has led to his appointment as Chair of Media Arts for the Illinois Arts Council, and he has been a driving force behind the founding of The National Puerto Rican Museum of Art in Chicago.
