Laura grew up in rural northeastern Vermont. Friends with birds, cats, and salamanders, she learned to walk under the tall whispering trees, a soft floor of spruce needles beneath her feet. Laura is a biophilic artist with a deep affinity for animals, plants, and life in general.
Laura graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in Illustration, having spent a year in Rome as part of RISD’s European Honors Program. Laura moved to Chicago from NYC in 2010 and was an undergraduate faculty member at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) from 2012 to 2026, teaching in the Fashion Department and Continuing Studies. In 2021, she established her studio LMN Wedge in the Flatiron Arts Building.
Laura's work is mainly observationally-based painting and drawing, usually including human subjects, natural objects, animals, and the natural world, sometimes suggesting deeper meanings and relationship. She also continures to be a student of art, and often works in variations of mediums she enjoys, with more attention to the process of making than to any deeper meaning of the observed subject. As a mother, she has begun integrating the playful mark-making of her own young child into her work, who often wants to paint or color on the same surface as her mom. Her artwork is available through her studio and gallery, and she accepts commissions for art and portraiture. Her favorite mediums are gouache and watercolor, acrylic paint, colored pencil, ballpoint pen, and graphite pencil.
Learning to embrace her own imperfect wholeness, and honor her place in the family of life, all with a sense of humor, and offer an example to others in their own process of engagement with life and their inner selves: This is her underlying intention. Her art classes at LMN Wedge Studio and Gallery, her destination-based art retreats, and her local community offerings are a unique opportunity for anyone interested in deepening their art practice, seeking technical skills, or looking for creative community.
